In case anyone is interested, you can access an 'aeroplane' mode in Google earth, and fly around the satellite maps, to give you a better feeling for distances etc. I'll double check, but I think you need to press Ctrl+Shift+A to enable this mode. It was originally hidden as a sort of beta feature, though the latest version may have it directly accessible from the menu?</description>
